The right pixel art character size is the smallest one that still shows what the character needs to show where people will see it, and for most artists that means 16, 32, 48 or 64 pixels tall. A character that walks around a game map can be tiny. A character used as a profile picture or a portrait needs room for a readable face. Settle the size first, because it decides the canvas you open in your editor and the size of the finished file.
The sections that follow show what fits at each size with real avatars from our pixel tools, and answer the Stardew Valley question.
What Size Is a Character Sprite?
Most character sprites are 16, 32, 48 or 64 pixels tall. Game sprites lean toward 16 by 16 and 32 by 32 because those match common tile grids, while portraits and avatars are often 48 or 64. Each step adds a lot of room: a 32 pixel square holds four times as many pixels as a 16 pixel one.
| Size | What fits | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 16px | A head and a body suggested by a few blocks of color. Eyes are one or two pixels. | Map sprites, small enemies, retro games with many characters on screen |
| 32px | A clear head, arms and legs, a hairstyle and one accessory. Simple expressions. | Main characters in top-down and side-scrolling games |
| 48px | A face with real expressions, outfit details, a pose that reads at a glance. | Portraits, profile pictures, larger game characters |
| 64px | Shading, folds in clothing, small props. It starts to need more time per frame. | Fighting games, detailed portraits, showcase art |
There is no rule that a character must be square. Many game characters are taller than they are wide, so a sprite of 16 by 32 pixels is common for a person.
Our pixel tools save at 48 pixels
The Pixel Cat Maker saves a 48 pixel PNG. The Square Face Pixel Art Icon Generator saves at 48 or doubled to 96 by 96. The full-body pixel avatar maker saves a whole character at 48 or 96, or a 72 by 72 crop of the head and shoulders.
Pixel cat
Full body
8-bit faceAt 48 pixels the full-body character fits head to toe with room for a smile, blush and a bow. The cat and the square face use the same grid for a close-up, so the eyes get enough pixels for highlights. That is why 48 is a common choice for avatars: big enough for a face, still small enough to look like pixel art.
What happens when you shrink a character
You cannot make a 16 pixel character by shrinking a 48 pixel one. Shrinking drops whole rows and columns, so lines break and features merge. Small sprites are drawn again from scratch at their own size, with every pixel placed on purpose.

Shrunk to 32
Shrunk to 16The same applies the other way. Enlarging a 16 pixel sprite to 64 pixels does not add detail; it only makes each pixel bigger. Pick the size before you start drawing.
Stardew Valley: 16x16 or 32x32?
Neither, exactly. According to the Stardew Valley Wiki's modding pages, the game's map tiles are 16 by 16 pixels, and each frame of the farmer sprite is 16 pixels wide by 32 pixels tall. So a Stardew-style character is one tile wide and two tiles tall.
If you want your character to sit naturally in a world like that, draw it 16 pixels wide and up to 32 tall, on a 16 pixel tile grid. A 32 by 32 character in the same world would look twice as big as everything around it.
How to choose your pixel art character size
- Decide where it will be seen. A sprite among dozens of others on a map can be 16 pixels. A portrait or profile picture needs 48 or more.
- Match the world. If the game uses 16 pixel tiles, keep characters in steps of that grid, such as 16 by 16 or 16 by 32.
- Count your animation frames. Each frame is drawn by hand. A 64 pixel walk cycle is four times the area of a 32 pixel one, for every frame.
- Plan the final display size. Pixel art is shown enlarged by a whole number with hard edges, such as 3 or 4 times. A 48 pixel sprite shown four times larger fills 192 pixels.
What Is the Best Pixel Art Resolution?
There is no single best pixel art resolution. The best one is the screen size divided by a whole number, so every art pixel turns into an even block. A full HD screen of 1920 by 1080 divides cleanly into 640 by 360 at three times or 480 by 270 at four times.
For a single avatar, the resolution is just the character size plus a small margin.
What Canvas Size Should I Use for Pixel Art?
Start at 32 by 32 if you are new to it. It is small enough to finish quickly and big enough for a recognizable character. Move to 16 when you want a challenge, or to 48 for faces and avatars. Make the canvas the size of the character, not the size of the final image: you enlarge it by a whole number after you finish, never before.

FAQ
Is 64x64 too big for pixel art?
No. Many detailed games and portraits use 64 pixels or more. The cost is time: every extra pixel is one more decision, and every animation frame takes longer.
Pick the size, then draw for it
Choose your pixel art character size by where the character will be seen, then draw every pixel for that size. Build a full-body character in the Pixel Art Avatar Icon Generator to see what fits on a 48 pixel grid, and read pixel art vs 8-bit for how old consoles shaped these sizes.
